Our Founding Story
On a trip to Asia, she unexpectedly found herself in Kyoto, where she encountered a culture of harmony, beauty, and well-being that healed her from skin to soul. Months from becoming a mother, Vicky studied the natural Japanese ingredients and timeless rituals that transformed her skin. Alongside a team of scientists, geisha, and cultural advisors, from Kyoto to San Francisco, she began a learning journey that continues to this day. Tatcha is a celebration of the wisdom and wonders learned along the way.
Our Skincare
Every formula is crafted at the Tatcha Institute in Tokyo, where leading scientists innovate within tradition: balancing timeless Japanese botanicals with proven clinical ingredients to work with skin, not against it.
Inside every Tatcha formula lives a tiny symphony of superfoods, amino acids, and AHAs called Hadasei-3™. This proprietary complex of twice-fermented rice, green tea, and algae is rooted in the nutrient-dense Japanese diet, largely considered the healthiest in the world.
Our Well-Being Rituals
Because skin affects and reflects your well-being, we believe that skincare can be care of all health: physical, mental, and even emotional. Our skincare formulas can be anchors of larger well-being rituals that touch the mind and engage the five senses for harmony from skin to soul.
Our Promise
Our promise is to help bring you harmony from skin to soul. The skin is a wondrous organ that carries you through life. We're concious of how we depict and talk about skin, honoring its dynamism as an organ, without perpetuating unhealthy beauty standards. We're phasing out the use of “normal” as a skin type because it implies that the natural condition of skin is somehow abnormal. We are also phasing out “anti-aging,” as a term because we believe that aging is a gift, and our formulas are crafted to support healthy aging. And finally, we’re making an even deeper commitment to portray skin as it really is, celebrating skin at every age, in every shade of beautiful.
Our First Offering: Original Aburatorigami
For generations, Japanese gold artisans used sheets of abaca leaf paper to protect the precious metal as they hammered it into whisper-thin leafing.
Resourceful geisha discovered a second use for these sheets, pressing the delicate paper to their faces to wick away every trace of oil without disturbing their exquisite makeup or stealing moisture from their skin. Inspired by this practice, our Original Aburatorigami blotting papers contain flecks of 23k gold as an homage to the workshops where the treasures were first discovered.
Our Purpose
Believing that beauty begins in the heart and the mind, we are invested in making quality education accessible to all. In 2014, we created the Beautiful Faces, Beautiful Futures fund to keep girls in school to reach their potential through Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program, and to bring diverse books to underserved communities in the United States through Room to Read’s U.S. literacy initiative by the end of 2021.
To date, our support has provided 6M days of school for Girls’ Education Program students and will soon support the printing and distribution of 70,000 diverse books in the Bay Area with the U.S. literacy initiative.
